Class descriptions
Yarn Explorations (3 hour specialty class)
Minimum 3 participants; one 3-hour class
$50 includes materials
Yarn is the basis of all fiber arts – knitting, crocheting and weaving alike. In order to understand how to put yarns together to make a textile, fiber artists need to understand the characteristics of the yarns. We’ll look at tools for yarn exploration, how to identify fiber content on “mystery yarns”, weight, twist, strengths and elasticity, among other characteristics. Most importantly, we’ll talk about why we should care about these characteristics.
This class is also excellent for spinners who want to understand more about the yarn they are making, how it can be utilized, and how it can be made better.
Materials for class:
- clear tape and/or a stapler
- scissors
- a stiff ruler
- a tape measure (preferably with cm)
- a variety of yarns – A few yards of whatever you have around is fine. We can share. Variety is key here! If you have the labels, bring those along.
Beginning Drop Spindle
Minimum 3 participants, max 6; one 3-hour class
$50 includes materials
Love fiber? Love yarn? Learn to make your own yarn from commercially prepared wool fibers using a drop spindle. Spinning with a drop spindle is relaxing and portable. Students may bring their own drop spindle or borrow one from the instructor. Each student in this half-day class will go home with a small skein of handspun yarn.
Beginning Spinning on a Wheel
Minimum 3 participants, max 5; one 5-hour class (with a break for lunch) or two 2-hour classes
$75 includes materials
Do you want to be able to spin your own yarn for knitting, weaving or gifting? Do you want to try different wheels to see what works best for you? Do you want to understand the difference between roving and top, and how to use them? Students will learn to spin from commercially prepared fiber and have the opportunity to try several types of wheels. Equipment and fiber will be provided for use in the class. Students may bring their own wheel in good working order if they have one.
Private Lessons
Private lessons are offered at $40/hour and are customized to the student. Mondays are preferred, but other times may be arranged. Contact me directly to set up a time.
