Workshops

Workshops are customized for the needs and interests of the group. One-day and multi-day workshops are available and are priced accordingly.

Potpourri of Weave Structures

This round robin workshop is designed for weaving guilds and groups who have access to looms. Each participant is assigned a draft according their own ability and loom availability. They measure their warps and warp their looms before the workshop begins. Over 2-4 days, depending on the specific arrangement, each participant weaves a sample on each loom. The product is a notebook of all the samples for each participant. Weaving drafts include plain weave, twill, overshot, lace, 3D fabrics, log cabin and others. Specific requests may be included.

Museum Staff Education

Would your museum staff like to know how your textile tools actually work? This class is customized for your museum or historic property. It can involve demonstrations of the tools, discussion of related vocabulary, hands-on learning to weave or spin, or any combination of details useful to the group.

18th c. Pocketbook Workshop

Based on an extant example, participants will make a “pocketbook”. This wallet-like accouterments was used primarily by men, but could also be used by women to carry important papers. Materials and patterns will be provided. The pocketbook will need to be completed after the class, but participants will learn and begin all the techniques necessary during the workshop.

18th c. Pincushion Workshop

Based on an extant example in the Westford Historical Society’s collections, participants will learn how to make an Irish Stitch pincushion. A complete kit and instructions will be provided. Stitches and techniques will be learned in the workshop, and participants will leave with the ability to complete the project at home.

Doubleweave V-Shawl

Learn how to design and weave a V-shaped shawl on a single warp, with no seams! The class starts with a review of double weave on 4 shafts, appropriate for all levels of weavers. The techniques will then be applied by demonstration to show participants how use them to weave a V-shawl or scarf. Expect “Aha!” moments! Participants will be able to try the techniques on a demo loom. The class will then turn to design and how the choice of warp color patterns changes the final product.
